The Hearing Assessment

The first step if you suspect you have a hearing loss is to have a hearing assessment. This involves a number for components. Firstly, your hearing clinician will ask you a series of questions designed to understand that nature of your hearing difficulties, what your ear health is like, and whether you are generally healthy. The clinician will then have a look in your ears. This enables them to see if your ear looks generally healthy and check to ensure that your ear canal is not blocked with wax or other debris that may be affecting your hearing. They will also insert a small probe into your ear which will gently change the pressure in your ear to check your middle ear health.
Make an Appointment

If your ear canals are clear, the clinician will proceed to the main part of the hearing test. This involves you indicating every time you hear a beep through a set of headphones. This information will give an overview of how loud sounds need to be for you to hear them. Once the clinician has this information, they will check how clearly the sounds are coming through using speech testing. This test involves you repeating words back as you hear them through the headphones. The clinician will guide you through each step of the hearing assessment providing you with instructions and answering any questions you may have.

The Results

Once the assessment is complete, your clinician will discuss the results with you. They will let you know if you have a hearing loss, what degree and type of hearing loss it is and what the next steps are. Next steps may involve referring you for medical management of your hearing loss or putting together a hearing rehabilitation plan specifically designed for you. The hearing rehabilitation plan is based on your hearing loss, communication needs and challenges, and your needs and wants. It is therefore designed collaboratively with you to help you achieve hearing and communication your goals. The plan might include:
  • Monitoring your hearing loss
  • Communication training
  • Hearing device fitting and support
  • Counselling and rehabilitation
It is important that you are comfortable with your rehabilitation plan so if you have any questions, make sure you ask your clinician.

Undergoing Medical Treatment?

Sometimes people need to undergo medical treatment that can be damaging to their hearing – for example – some types of chemotherapy. If such a treatment is recommended it is because your doctor feels it is warranted. However, it is often useful to monitor your hearing during this time.
